What to Do in an Electrical Emergency: A Homeowner's Checklist
Sparking outlets, burning smells and breakers that won't reset. A simple checklist for what to do in the first minutes of an electrical emergency.
Electrical problems rarely happen at a convenient time. Knowing what to do in the first few minutes keeps your family safe and prevents more damage.
Know What Counts as an Emergency
Sparking outlets, a burning smell, smoke from an outlet or panel, a breaker that will not reset, buzzing from the panel, exposed wiring, and losing power when your neighbors still have it all need immediate attention.
Step 1: Get Safe
If you see smoke or flames, get everyone out and call 911. Never use water on an electrical fire.
Step 2: Cut the Power if It Is Safe
If you can reach the panel without standing in water or touching anything hot, switch off the affected breaker or the main breaker. If the panel itself is sparking or hot, stay away from it.
Step 3: Do Not Keep Resetting Breakers
Resetting a breaker once is fine. If it trips again right away, stop. Repeated resets can overheat wiring and turn a small problem into a fire.
Step 4: Stay Clear After Storms
Treat downed lines as live. Keep away from flooded rooms where outlets or cords may be underwater, and have water-damaged panels and outlets inspected before turning power back on.
Step 5: Call a Licensed Electrician
Electrical faults need a professional diagnosis. A licensed electrician will find the root cause instead of just restoring power.
Prevent the Next One
Many emergencies trace back to overloaded panels, outdated wiring or failing outlets. A routine inspection can catch these early.
